Day 5: The 3D World (Cubes & Spheres) 🧊⚽

Foundation Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

🎯 1. Concept: Flat vs. Fat!

Welcome to Day 5! Yesterday, we learned about 2D shapes like squares and circles. 2D shapes are completely flat, like a drawing on a piece of paper.

Today, we are learning about 3D Shapes! These are shapes that are “fat” or “solid.” You can pick them up, hold them in your hands, and build towers with them.

💡 2. Meet the 3D Shape Family

Let’s meet 4 very special 3D shapes:

  • Sphere (Sfear): It is perfectly round like a ball. It has no flat sides and no corners. It loves to roll!
  • 🧊 Cube: It looks like a box! It has 6 flat faces that are all perfect squares.
  • 🥫 Cylinder: It is long and round, but it has a flat circle on the top and a flat circle on the bottom. It can roll AND stand up!
  • 🍦 Cone: It has a flat circle on the bottom, but the top pinches into a single sharp point.

🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life

You play with 3D shapes every single day!

Scenario 1: You are playing Ludo. The dice you throw is a perfect Cube!

Scenario 2: You are eating an ice cream. The crispy part you hold in your hand is a Cone!

Scenario 3: You drink water from a bottle or a can of soda. That shape is called a Cylinder.

📝 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)

Parents, please guide your child with these fun 3D experiments!

  • Task A: The Roll Test: Find a ball (Sphere) and a small box (Cube). Push them both across the floor. Which one rolls? Which one just slides?
  • Task B: The Cylinder Hunt: Go to the kitchen and find 3 things that are shaped like Cylinders. (Hint: look in the pantry or the fridge!)
  • Task C: Tower Building: Try to balance a ball (Sphere) on top of another ball. Can you do it? Now try stacking two blocks (Cubes). Which shape is better for building?

✅ 5. Day 5 Practice Test

Let’s test your 3D shape skills! This quiz gets harder as you go. Select your answers and click submit.

Easy
1. Which 3D shape is perfectly round like a football?
Solution: A Sphere is completely round with no flat sides. Every ball is a sphere!
Easy
2. What 3D shape looks exactly like a party hat you wear on your birthday?
Solution: A Cone has a circle on the bottom and comes to a point at the top, just like a party hat or an ice cream cone.
Easy
3. When you play a board game, you roll a dice. A dice is an example of which shape?
Solution: A dice has flat, square sides. It is a Cube!
Easy
4. A standard battery or a can of soda is shaped like a…
Solution: A Cylinder has a round tube body with flat circles on the top and bottom, just like a soda can.
Medium
5. Which 3D shape can roll smoothly across the floor, but is almost IMPOSSIBLE to stack on top of another one?
Solution: Spheres roll wonderfully, but because they have zero flat sides, you cannot stack them!
Medium
6. How is a Cube different from a regular Square?
Solution: You can draw a square on paper (flat), but you can hold a cube in your hand (solid).
Medium
7. A Cylinder has two flat ends. If you dip the end of a cylinder in paint and stamp it on paper, what flat shape will it leave?
Solution: The flat top and bottom of a cylinder are perfect Circles!
Medium
8. If you look at an ice cream Cone from the very bottom (looking up at the flat part), what shape do you see?
Solution: A cone has one flat face on the bottom, and it is shaped like a circle.
Hard
9. You are trying to build the tallest tower possible out of blocks. Which shapes are the BEST to use for the bottom so it doesn’t fall over?
Solution: To build a tall tower, you need shapes with flat tops and flat bottoms. Cubes and standing Cylinders are perfect!
Hard
10. Riddle Time: “I have zero flat faces, zero straight edges, and zero corners. I look the exact same no matter which way you turn me.” What am I?
Solution: You are a Sphere! A sphere has no edges, no corners, and no flat faces. It is perfectly uniform all around.
