Day 7: Mapping the Numbers ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ข

Middle Stage (Grades 6, 7 & 8) | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

๐ŸŽฏ 1. Concept: What is a Rational Number?

Welcome to Day 7! We have looked at Integers (positive and negative whole numbers) and Fractions. Today, we bring them all together into one big family called Rational Numbers.

A Rational Number is simply any number that can be written as a fraction. This includes:

  • Fractions: Like 1/2 or -3/4.
  • Decimals: Like 0.5 (which is 1/2) or 0.25 (which is 1/4).
  • Whole Numbers & Integers: Yes, even the number 5 is rational, because you can write it as the fraction 5/1!

๐Ÿ’ก 2. The Number Line Map

Imagine the Number Line as a long, straight highway.

  • Zero (0) is the center marker. It is neither positive nor negative.
  • Positive numbers live on the RIGHT side. As you walk right, the numbers get bigger.
  • Negative numbers live on the LEFT side. As you walk left, the numbers get smaller (colder, deeper).

Where does 1/2 live? It is bigger than 0, but smaller than 1. So, it lives exactly halfway between 0 and 1 on the highway!

๐ŸŒ 3. Math in Our Daily Life

We use the rational number line to measure extremes in the real world.

Scenario 1 (Altitude): Sea level is exactly 0. A helicopter flying high in the sky is at a positive altitude (+500 meters). A submarine diving deep underwater is at a negative altitude (-250.5 meters).

Scenario 2 (Bank Accounts): If you have โ‚น1000 in your bank, you are at +1000. If you spend โ‚น1500, you don’t just hit 0. You drop below zero! The bank will show your balance as -โ‚น500 (meaning you owe them money). You are now on the negative side of the financial number line.

๐Ÿ“ 4. Analytical Tasks

Grab your math journal and try mapping these out:

  • Task A: Draw the Map: Draw a long horizontal line. Put a ‘0’ in the middle. Mark integers from -5 to +5.
  • Task B: Plot the Points: On your drawn number line, place a dot where these rational numbers belong: 2.5, -1, and -3.5.

โœ… 5. Day 7 Application Test

Can you navigate the number line? This quiz gets progressively harder. Select your answers below and click submit.

Easy
1. What is the definition of a Rational Number?
Solution: A rational number is any number you can express as a fraction (a ratio of two integers).
Easy
2. On a standard horizontal number line, where do the negative numbers live?
Solution: Positives are on the right, negatives are always on the left!
Easy
3. Which number sits exactly in the center of the number line, acting as the mirror between positive and negative?
Solution: Zero is the center marker. It is the only number that is neither positive nor negative.
Easy
4. Which of these is a Rational Number?
Solution: Both! -1/2 is a fraction, and 5 can be written as the fraction 5/1.
Medium
5. If you were plotting the fraction 1/2 on a number line, between which two whole numbers would you put your dot?
Solution: 1/2 is positive, so it’s to the right of 0. It is smaller than 1. So it lives halfway between 0 and 1.
Medium
6. Where does the decimal -3.5 live on the number line?
Solution: Start at 0, walk left to -3. Then walk another half step left. You are now between -3 and -4.
Medium
7. Look at the number line in your head. Which number is LARGER: -2 or -5?
Solution: On the number line, numbers get bigger the further RIGHT they are. -2 is to the right of -5, making it larger. (Think of it as temperature: -2ยฐ is warmer than -5ยฐ!).
Medium
8. You start at the 0 marker. You take a 3/4 step to the LEFT. Where are you standing now?
Solution: Moving to the left means moving into the negative numbers. You are standing at -3/4.
Hard
9. ๐Ÿง  Puzzle: A submarine is diving at -50 meters. A drone is flying directly above it at +50 meters. What is the total distance between the submarine and the drone?
Solution: The submarine is 50 meters below sea level (0). The drone is 50 meters above sea level (0). 50 + 50 = 100 meters apart!
Hard
10. ๐Ÿง  Finance Puzzle: Your bank account is overdrawn. You have a balance of -โ‚น500. Your mom gives you โ‚น200 for chores, and you deposit it into the bank. What is your new bank balance?
Solution: You start at -500. Depositing money means moving RIGHT (positive) on the number line by 200. -500 + 200 = -300. You still owe the bank โ‚น300!

  1. It is easy โœจ. I got 10 out of 10 but then also I will practice again to revise again
