Day 10: Intro to Trigonometry! 📐
Secondary Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
🎯 1. Concept: The Magic of Triangles
Welcome to Day 10! Today we unlock one of the most powerful tools in geometry: Trigonometry.
Trigonometry is the study of the relationships between the sides and angles of triangles. Specifically, we will be focusing on Right-Angled Triangles (triangles that have one perfect 90-degree corner).
💡 2. The Golden Word: SOH CAH TOA
To master Trigonometry, memorize this magic phrase: SOH CAH TOA!
Before using it, you must label the three sides of your right triangle based on the angle you are looking at:
- Hypotenuse (H): The longest side, ALWAYS directly across from the 90-degree angle.
- Opposite (O): The side directly across from the angle you are looking at.
- Adjacent (A): The side directly next to the angle you are looking at.
The Formulas:
- SOH: Sine = Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse
- CAH: Cosine = Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse
- TOA: Tangent = Opposite ÷ Adjacent
🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life
Trigonometry built the modern world!
Scenario 1: Video Games. When you play a 3D video game, the graphics engine is constantly using trigonometry (sines and cosines) to calculate how objects should rotate, move, and cast shadows relative to your character’s viewpoint.
Scenario 2: Architecture. If an engineer wants to build a wheelchair ramp, it must have a specific safe slope. They use the Tangent ratio (Opposite/Adjacent, which is height/length) to ensure the angle of the ramp is perfect before pouring any concrete.
📝 4. Home Practice (Observation Task)
Let’s see Trigonometry in action!
- Task A: The Staircase Ratio: Find a staircase in your house. Measure the height of one step (the “rise” or Opposite) and the depth of the step (the “run” or Adjacent). Write them as a fraction (Opposite / Adjacent). You just found the Tangent of the staircase angle!
- Task B: The Shadow Check: Go outside when the sun is out. Stand straight up (you are the Opposite side). Your shadow on the ground is the Adjacent side. The invisible line from your head to the end of the shadow is the Hypotenuse!
