Day 3: The Magic of Taking Away! ➖
Foundation Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
🎯 1. Concept: What is Subtraction?
Welcome to Day 3! Yesterday, we learned how to add things together. Today, we will learn the opposite: Subtraction.
Subtraction means taking things away from a group to see how many are left. When we subtract, our total number gets smaller!
We use a special symbol for this. It looks like a small sleeping line and is called the Minus Sign (-).
💡 2. Let’s Look at Examples
Let’s use our fingers to subtract!
- Hold up 5 fingers. Now, fold 2 fingers down (take them away). How many are still standing? 3 fingers! (5 – 2 = 3)
- Imagine you have 4 balloons 🎈🎈🎈🎈. Oh no! 1 balloon pops 💥. Now you have 3 balloons left. (4 – 1 = 3)
- You have 3 toys. You don’t give any away (you take away 0). You still have 3 toys! (3 – 0 = 3)
🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life
We use subtraction every time we eat or share something!
Scenario 1: Your mother gives you 4 delicious cookies 🍪🍪🍪🍪. You are hungry and eat 2 of them. How many are left for later? Only 2 cookies! (4 – 2 = 2)
Scenario 2: You have 5 crayons. Your sister asks to borrow 1 crayon to draw a sun. You give it to her. Now you have 4 crayons left in your box. (5 – 1 = 4)
📝 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)
Parents, please guide your child with these fun subtraction games!
- Task A: The Snack Math: Put 6 grapes (or pieces of a snack) on a plate. Eat 2 of them. Count how many are left on the plate!
- Task B: The Toy Garage: Line up 5 toy cars. Pretend 3 of them drive away to the market. Count the cars that stayed home.
- Task C: The Magic Zero: Hold 3 pencils. Give all 3 to your parent. How many are left in your hand? (Zero!)
