Day 15: Introduction to Decimals

Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

πŸš€ Level 1: The Quest (Concept)

Welcome, Math Explorer! Have you ever seen a number like 1.5 or 0.75? These are called Decimals! They represent parts of a whole, just like fractions, but written using a dot called a Decimal Point.

The Tenths Grid
Imagine a square cut into 10 equal strips. If you color 1 strip, it is $\frac{1}{10}$, which we write as 0.1.
$\frac{1}{10} = 0.1$ (Zero point One)

When we divide that same square into 100 tiny boxes, each box is a Hundredth or 0.01.

⚑ Level 2: Power-Ups (Tools/Methods)

The Place Value Secret:
Numbers to the left of the dot are WHOLE. Numbers to the right are PARTS.
– 1st place after dot = Tenths ($\frac{1}{10}$)
– 2nd place after dot = Hundredths ($\frac{1}{100}$)
Number Line Strategy:
Between 0 and 1, we can find 0.1, 0.2, 0.3… all the way to 0.9 and then 1.0!
Example: $0.5$ is exactly in the middle of $0$ and $1$.

πŸ‘Ύ Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles

Scenario 1: The Candy Shop
You buy a chocolate for β‚Ή5 and 50 paise. In decimals, we write this as β‚Ή5.50. The “50” represents 50 hundredths of a Rupee!
Scenario 2: The School Race
Rahul ran the race in 12.4 seconds. This means he took 12 full seconds and 4 tenths of another second.

🏠 Level 4: Home Quests (Activities)

Quest 1: The Ruler Hunt
Take a ruler and look at the small lines between 0 and 1 cm. Those are millimeters! Can you find the point for 0.5 cm? Show it to your parents.
Quest 2: Price Tag Detective
Look at a grocery bill or a chocolate wrapper. Find a price with a decimal point. Write down how many ‘Tenths’ and ‘Hundredths’ are in that price.

πŸ‘‘ Final Boss: Practice Test

1. How do we write $\frac{7}{10}$ as a decimal? EASY
Magic Solution: Since there is one zero in 10, the decimal moves one place left. So, 0.7.
2. In the number 4.56, which digit is in the hundredths place? EASY
Magic Solution: The second digit after the decimal point is the hundredths place.
3. 0.3 is the same as: EASY
Magic Solution: The first decimal place is the ‘Tenths’ place.
4. How is “Zero point zero five” written? EASY
Magic Solution: “Zero point (0.) zero (0) five (5)” gives 0.05.
5. Which is greater: 0.7 or 0.07? MODERATE
Magic Solution: 0.7 is 70 hundredths, while 0.07 is only 7 hundredths.
6. Convert $\frac{25}{100}$ to a decimal. MODERATE
Magic Solution: Dividing by 100 moves the decimal two places to the left.
7. On a number line, 0.5 lies exactly between: MODERATE
Magic Solution: 0.5 is half of 1, so it sits between 0 and 1.
8. 1.2 is equal to: MODERATE
Magic Solution: 1 is the whole number, and .2 is the tenths place ($\frac{2}{10}$).
9. If you have 100 boxes and color 45, what is the decimal? COMPLEX
Magic Solution: 45 out of 100 is $\frac{45}{100} = 0.45$.
10. What is 0.9 + 0.1? COMPLEX
Magic Solution: 9 tenths + 1 tenth = 10 tenths, which makes 1 whole!
