Day 08: Levels of Organization – Cells to Tissues to Organs | Middle Stage Science
Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
Just like a massive building is made of tiny bricks, every living thing is built from tiny parts! Our quest today is to understand how these parts work together in a hierarchy to create a functioning human body or a giant tree.
The biological Hierarchy
Cells are the building blocks; Tissues are teams of cells; Organs are groups of tissues working together!
| Level | Definition |
|---|---|
| Tissue | A group of similar cells working together (e.g., Muscle tissue). |
| Organ | Different tissues working for one goal (e.g., The Heart). |
Think of a restaurant. A single chef (Cell) can cook. But a group of chefs (Tissue) makes the kitchen faster. When the kitchen, waiters, and cleaners work together, they form a “Dining Service” (Organ System).
Your heart is an organ. It uses muscle tissue to pump, nerve tissue to signal when to beat, and connective tissue to hold it all together. If one “team” stops, the organ fails!
Use Lego bricks or building blocks with your parents. Let one brick represent a cell. Build a wall (tissue), and then a room (organ). Discuss how each level is needed for the house (organism) to stand!
Find your pulse on your wrist. That “thump” is your Circulatory System at work! Count your heartbeats for 1 minute with your parent and draw a diagram showing how blood travels from the heart to the tissues.
