🎯 1. Concept: What is Place Value?

Welcome to the Preparatory Stage! As numbers get bigger, we need a system to understand exactly what they mean. Place Value tells us the value of a digit based on its position in a number.

Think of it like a house with different rooms: The Ones room is on the right, the Tens room is in the middle, and the Hundreds room is on the left.

💡 2. Let’s Look at an Example

Let’s break down the number 345:

  • 5 is in the Ones place. Its value is just 5.
  • 4 is in the Tens place. Its value is 40 (four tens).
  • 3 is in the Hundreds place. Its value is 300 (three hundreds).

So, 345 = 300 + 40 + 5.

🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life

We use place value every day, especially when handling Indian Currency!

Scenario 1: Imagine you have ₹426. That means you could have 4 Hundred-Rupee notes, 2 Ten-Rupee coins, and 6 One-Rupee coins.

Scenario 2: You are reading a storybook and you are on page 108. The ‘0’ in the middle is very important! It tells us there are no Tens, only 1 Hundred and 8 Ones. Without the zero, it would just be page 18!

📝 4. Home Practice (Observation Tasks)

Students, grab your rough notebook and become a Number Detective!

  • Task A: Look at the number plates of 3 cars or bikes on your street. Write them down and circle the digit in the “Tens” place for each.
  • Task B: Ask your parents to show you an electricity bill or a grocery receipt. Find the largest 3-digit number on it and write it in expanded form (e.g., 500 + 20 + 3).
  • Task C: Make the largest possible 3-digit number using the digits 7, 2, and 9. (Hint: Put the biggest digit in the Hundreds place!)

Solution: 5 is in the middle, which is the Tens place. Its value is 50.
2. What is the value of the digit ‘3’ in the number 382?

3. How do we write “Two hundred and forty-five” in numbers?
Solution: 2 hundreds (200) + 4 tens (40) + 5 ones (5) = 245.
4. If I have two ₹100 notes, three ₹10 coins, and four ₹1 coins, how much money do I have?
Solution: 2 Hundreds (200) + 3 Tens (30) + 4 Ones (4) = 234.
5. Which of these numbers is the LARGEST?
Solution: Always check the hundreds place first. Both have 8 hundreds. Next, check the tens place: 9 is bigger than 1. So, 891 is largest!
6. What is exactly 100 more than 542?
Solution: Just add 1 to the Hundreds digit. 5 becomes 6. The answer is 642.
7. In the number 907, what is the value of the digit ‘0’?
Solution: The digit 0 means there are ZERO Tens. Its value is simply 0!
8. What number comes immediately AFTER 499?
Solution: If you add 1 to 499, the 9s roll over, making it the next hundred: 500.
9. Make the SMALLEST possible 3-digit number using the digits 2, 8, and 5.
Solution: To make the smallest number, put the smallest digit in the Hundreds place (2), the next smallest in the Tens (5), and the largest in the Ones (8). Answer: 258.
10. 5 Hundreds + 0 Tens + 9 Ones equals?
Solution: Combine the digits in order: 5, then 0, then 9. The number is 509.
