๐ŸŽฏ 1. Concept: Letters as Numbers?!

Welcome to Week 3! Today, we are stepping into the world of Algebra. This is where letters start hanging out with numbers!

In algebra, we use letters (like x, y, or a) to stand in for numbers we don’t know yet. We call these letters Variables because their value can vary (change).

๐Ÿ’ก 2. The Language of Algebra

To speak Algebra, you need to know the vocabulary:

  • Variable: A letter representing an unknown number (e.g., x).
  • Coefficient: The number multiplied by the variable. In 5x, the 5 is the coefficient. It means 5 times x!
  • Constant: A normal number that never changes (like 7 or 12).
  • Expression vs. Equation:
An Expression is a phrase without an equal sign (e.g., 2x + 3).
    An Equation is a full sentence with an equal sign (e.g., 2x + 3 = 11).

๐ŸŒ 3. Math in Our Daily Life

You already do algebra in your head all the time!

Scenario 1: Buying Snacks. If you buy 3 chocolate bars and the total is โ‚น30, your brain automatically does algebra: 3 ร— (price of chocolate) = 30. Or, 3c = 30. You solve for c and know each bar is โ‚น10!

Scenario 2: Video Game Scores. You get 50 points for passing a level and 10 bonus points for every coin you collect. Your score is an expression: 50 + 10c (where c is the number of coins).

๐Ÿ“ 4. Home Practice (Observation Task)

Let’s write some real-life algebraic expressions!

  • Task A: The Age Game: Pick someone in your family. Let their age be the variable y. Write an expression for their age in 5 years. (Hint: y + 5). Write an expression for double their age!
  • Task B: The Wallet Mystery: Assume you have x rupees in your wallet. If your parent gives you โ‚น50, write an expression for how much money you have now!

โœ… 5. Day 11 Practice Test

Are you an Algebra Master? Take this quiz to test your skills. Select your answers and click submit to check your score.

Easy
1. What is a “variable” in algebra?
Solution: A variable is a letter (like x or y) that stands in for a number we don’t know yet.
Easy
2. What does 4y actually mean?
Solution: When a number and a letter are squished together, it means they are being multiplied!
Easy
3. What is the difference between an Expression and an Equation?
Solution: Equations EQUAL something. Expressions are just mathematical phrases without an equal sign.
Easy
4. How do you write “5 more than x” as an algebraic expression?
Solution: “More than” means addition. So you take x and add 5 to it: x + 5.
Medium
5. What is the “Coefficient” in the expression: 7a + 2?
Solution: The coefficient is the number multiplied right next to the variable. Here, it is 7. (The 2 is a constant).
Medium
6. Translate this into algebra: “Three times a number p, minus 4.”
Solution: “Three times p” is 3p. “Minus 4” means subtract 4. Result: 3p – 4.
Medium
7. Evaluate the expression x + 8 if x = 3.
Solution: Replace the ‘x’ with a 3. Then solve: 3 + 8 = 11.
Medium
8. Evaluate the expression 2y – 1 if y = 4.
Solution: Replace ‘y’ with 4. Multiply first: 2(4) = 8. Then subtract 1. 8 – 1 = 7.
Hard
9. Combine “like terms” to simplify this expression: 3a + 4a + 2
Solution: You can add terms with the exact same letter together. 3a + 4a = 7a. The constant (+2) stays separate. 7a + 2.
Hard
10. Brain Teaser: I think of a number, double it, and add 1. The result is 11. What is the equation?
Solution: “Think of a number” (n), “double it” (2n), “add 1” (+1), “result is 11” (= 11). Giving us 2n + 1 = 11.
