Day 12: Our Blue Planet – Land, water, and air

Foundation Stage (Grades 1–2) Science | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

🌍 Level 1: The Quest (Concept)

Welcome, Young Explorer! Did you know that when astronauts look at our Planet Earth from outer space, it looks like a beautiful bright blue marble? That is because Earth is filled with beautiful treasures: Land to walk on, Water to splash in, and Air to breathe!

The Magic Fractions of Earth

Imagine dividing Earth into 4 equal pieces. Around $\frac{3}{4}$ of the Earth is covered in sparkling water, and only $\frac{1}{4}$ is solid land! Surrounding everything like an invisible blanket is the air.

Treasure What we find there!
🟢 Land Mountains, plains, hills, forests, and deserts.
🔵 Water Oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, and waterfalls.
💨 Air The atmosphere that stays all around us.

⚡ Level 2: Power-Ups (Tools & Methods)

To master this topic, remember these super simple identification tricks!

💡 Explorer Trick 1: The Air Test
You cannot see air, but you can feel it! Blow onto the back of your hand right now. That cool feeling is moving air, which we call wind!

Shape Power-Up Chart

Let’s map out how Land and Water change shapes across our planet:

  • ⛰️ Mountain: Very high, steep rocky land.
  • 🌾 Plain: Flat, even land where crops grow.
  • 🌊 Ocean: Giant areas of salty water.
  • 💧 River: Fresh flowing water moving down to the sea.

⚔️ Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles (Applications)

Can you apply your powers to solve these real-world challenges?

Scenario 1: Pinky’s Kite Dilemma
Pinky wants to fly her new colorful kite at the park, but it keeps falling straight to the ground. What component of our planet is missing or too quiet today?
Answer: The moving air (wind)! Without moving air, kites cannot lift up into the sky.
Scenario 2: Sammy the Fish
Sammy the fish lives in a pond. If the pond runs dry because of extreme heat, why can’t Sammy just come up and walk on the grassy meadow next to it?
Answer: Aquatic animals need the water environment to breathe and live. They cannot survive on land like humans do.

🏡 Level 4: Home Quests (Activities)

Complete these missions at home with your parents to lock in your points!

Quest 1: The Three-Column Hunt 📋
Take a blank piece of paper and draw three big vertical lines. Label them “Land”, “Water”, and “Air”. Walk around your home or look out the window with a parent. Write down or draw 3 items that belong to each column (e.g., Plant pot in land, water bottle in water, birds flying in air!).
Quest 2: Catch the Air Challenge 🎈
Get an empty plastic bag or a balloon. With your parent’s help, swing it open through the room and trap whatever is inside by holding the opening shut. Look inside! Is it empty? No, it’s full of trapped air! Squeeze it gently to feel the resistance.

👹 Final Boss: Practice Test

Answer all 10 questions to defeat the Final Boss and claim your badge!

EASY
Q1. What color does planet Earth look like from outer space?
Magic Solution: B is correct! Because Earth is mostly covered by vast oceans of water, it looks bright blue from space.
EASY
Q2. Which of these can we find on land?
Magic Solution: C is correct! Mountains are very tall landforms made of rocks and soil found on land.
EASY
Q3. What do we call moving air?
Magic Solution: C is correct! When air moves around quickly, we call it wind. It helps fly kites!
EASY
Q4. Where do fish naturally live and breathe?
Magic Solution: D is correct! Fish need water to live, swim, and breathe through their special gills.
MODERATE
Q5. Earth is divided such that most of it is water. Which fraction shows the water coverage?
Magic Solution: C is correct! Around $\frac{3}{4}$ (three-quarters) of our planet is covered by watery oceans, lakes, and rivers.
MODERATE
Q6. Which statement about air is completely TRUE?
Magic Solution: B is correct! Air surrounds the whole planet like an invisible blanket, even if we cannot see it.
MODERATE
Q7. What kind of landform is flat and very good for farming crops?
Magic Solution: C is correct! Plains are broad, flat lands where it is easy to build houses and grow food crops.
MODERATE
Q8. Why is ocean water different from normal river water?
Magic Solution: A is correct! Oceans contain large amounts of dissolved salts, making the water salty to taste.
COMPLEX
Q9. Imagine a bird, a tiger, and a dolphin. Which planetary parts do they primarily rely on to move?
Magic Solution: C is correct! Birds fly through the air, tigers walk/run across the solid land, and dolphins swim in water.
COMPLEX
Q10. What would happen to our planet if all the air disappeared completely?
Magic Solution: B is correct! Air contains oxygen which is required by humans, animals, and plants to breathe and live. Without it, life cannot exist.
