Day 13: Equivalent Fractions

Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

🚀 Level 1: The Quest (Concept)

Welcome, Math Explorer! Today’s quest is to discover Equivalent Fractions. These are fractions that look different but actually represent the same amount of a whole. It’s like having a pizza cut into 2 big slices or 4 smaller slices—you still eat the same amount of pizza!

1/2

=

2/4

=

4/8

Notice how the yellow shaded area is the same size in every circle!

⚡ Level 2: Power-Ups (Methods)

The Golden Rule: Whatever you do to the top (Numerator), you MUST do to the bottom (Denominator)!

  • To create: Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.
  • To simplify: Divide both by their greatest common factor until they can’t go smaller.

Example: Simplifying 4/12

4 ÷ 4 = 1

12 ÷ 4 = 3

So, 4/12 = 1/3

🥊 Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles

Scenario 1: The Chocolate Bar
Rohan has a chocolate bar with 8 pieces. He eats 4 pieces (4/8). Meena has the same size bar but only 2 big pieces. She eats 1 piece (1/2). Did they eat the same amount? Yes! 4/8 is equivalent to 1/2.

Scenario 2: Measuring Juice
If a recipe asks for 2/4 cup of orange juice, but you only have a 1/2 cup measure, don’t worry! Filling the 1/2 cup once is exactly the same amount.

🏠 Level 4: Home Quests

Task 1: Paper Folding
Take two identical strips of paper. Fold the first one in half (1/2). Fold the second one into quarters (4 parts) and color 2 parts (2/4). Place them side-by-side to see they are equal!

Task 2: Kitchen Fractions
With a parent, find a measuring cup. Fill 2/4 of a cup with water. Pour it into another identical cup and see if it looks like half (1/2) a cup.

👾 Final Boss: Practice Test

1. Which fraction is equivalent to 1/2? EASY

2. If you multiply the numerator by 3, what must you do to the denominator to keep it equivalent? EASY

3. Is 5/10 equivalent to 1/2? EASY

4. What is the simplified form of 2/6? EASY

5. Find the missing number: 1/4 = ?/12 MODERATE

6. Which of these is NOT equivalent to 1/3? MODERATE

7. To simplify 8/24 to its lowest form, what is the largest number you can divide by? MODERATE

8. 10/20 is equivalent to: MODERATE

9. Which pair of fractions are NOT equivalent? COMPLEX

10. If a pizza is cut into 12 slices and you eat 1/3 of it, how many slices did you eat? COMPLEX
