Day 14: Hard, Soft, Smooth – Properties of Materials
Foundation Stage (Grades 1–2) Science | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
💎 Level 1: The Quest (Concept)
Welcome, Little Scientists! Today our hands are our best tools. Everything around us is made of different materials. When we touch them, they feel different! Let’s explore three magical properties:
🧱 Hard
Cannot be squeezed easily. Strong and tough!
🧸 Soft
Easy to press, squeeze, or change shape!
🥚 Smooth
Even and flat. Your fingers slide easily!
🔍 The Touch Test:
- A stone is hard because it does not change shape when you press it.
- A cotton ball is soft because it squishes in your hand.
- A glass marble is smooth because it has no bumps.
⚡ Level 2: Power-Ups (Tools & Methods)
💡 Super Science Trick: The Squeeze Method!
To find out if an object is Hard or Soft, close your hand and press it tightly!
👉 If it stays exactly the same = Hard!
👉 If it changes shape or goes flat = Soft!

| Wooden Table | Firm and rigid | HARD |
| Teddy Bear | Fluffy and squashy | SOFT |
| Plastic Ruler | Flat with no bumps | SMOOTH |
⚔️ Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles (Daily Life Applications)
Scenario 1: Choosing a Pillow 🛏️
When you go to sleep, you want your head to rest comfortably. Why do we choose pillows filled with cotton instead of building them out of solid bricks?
Answer: Cotton is soft and changes shape to support your head gently, while a brick is hard and would hurt!

Scenario 2: The Playground Slide 🛝
Why are playground slides made of shiny plastic or polished steel rather than rough wood blocks?
Answer: The surface must be perfectly smooth so your clothes can easily slide down without getting stuck!

🏡 Level 4: Home Quests (Activities & Tasks)
🎯 Task 1: The Mystery Touch Bag (Parent-Child Game)
Parents, place 3 different items inside an empty, clean bag (e.g., a steel spoon, a soft sponge, and a plastic egg). Have your child close their eyes, put a hand inside, grab one object, and guess its property before pulling it out! Write down if they successfully identified the hard, soft, or smooth object.

🎨 Task 2: Nature’s Textures Drawing Book
Go out into your garden or balcony with your parents. Find one object that is hard (like a stone) and one object that feels smooth (like a fresh green leaf). Draw a simple sketch of both items in your notebook and color them!
