Day 16: Comparing & Ordering

Preparatory Stage (Grades 3-5) Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

1 Level 1: The Quest (Concept)

Welcome, Math Explorer! Today’s quest is to master the art of Comparing. Imagine you have two pizza slices or two bags of goldβ€”how do you know which one is bigger? We use special signs to show the relationship between numbers:

\( > \) (Greater Than) | \( < \) (Less Than) | \( = \) (Equal To)

Example: \( \frac{1}{2} \) of a cake is bigger than \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the same cake!

Fractions Decimals
\( \frac{3}{10} < \frac{7}{10} \) \( 0.5 > 0.05 \)

2 Level 2: Power-Ups (Tools & Methods)

πŸš€ The “Same Denominator” Trick: To compare fractions, make the bottom numbers (denominators) the same. Then, just look at the top numbers (numerators)!
Decimal Power-Up: The Placeholder Zero

To compare \( 0.7 \) and \( 0.65 \), add a zero to make them the same length:

\( 0.70 \) vs \( 0.65 \)

Clearly, \( 70 \) is bigger than \( 65 \), so \( 0.7 > 0.65 \)!

3 Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles

Battle 1: The Juice Shop

Rahul drinks \( 0.4 \) liters of juice, and Sneha drinks \( \frac{1}{2} \) liter. Who drank more? (Hint: \( \frac{1}{2} = 0.5 \))

Battle 2: The Race Track

A car covers \( \frac{3}{4} \) of a track. Another car covers \( \frac{5}{8} \). Which car is closer to the finish line?

4 Level 4: Home Quests

Quest 1: The Kitchen Audit

Find two packets of snacks. Look at their weight (e.g., 0.5kg and 250g). Convert them to decimals and tell your parents which one is heavier!

Quest 2: Water Level Drawing

Take 3 identical glasses. Fill one \( \frac{1}{4} \), one \( \frac{1}{2} \), and one \( \frac{3}{4} \). Draw them in your notebook from Shortest to Tallest.

5 Final Boss: Practice Test

1. Which sign makes the statement true? \( \frac{5}{10} \) ___ \( \frac{2}{10} \) EASY

Magic Solution: Since denominators are both 10, compare 5 and 2. 5 is larger!

2. Compare: \( 0.3 \) ___ \( 0.35 \) EASY

Magic Solution: Think of \( 0.3 \) as \( 0.30 \). \( 0.30 \) is smaller than \( 0.35 \).

3. Is \( \frac{1}{2} \) equal to \( 0.5 \)? EASY

Magic Solution: Half of something is exactly 0.5 in decimal form.

4. Which is the smallest? EASY

Magic Solution: \( 0.09 \) has 0 in the tenths place, making it the smallest.

5. Arrange \( \frac{1}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{2}{4} \) in ascending order: MODERATE

Magic Solution: When denominators are same, compare 1, 2, and 3.

6. Compare: \( 0.8 \) ___ \( \frac{8}{100} \) MODERATE

Magic Solution: \( 0.8 = 0.80 \) and \( \frac{8}{100} = 0.08 \). \( 0.80 > 0.08 \).

7. Which of these is GREATER than \( 0.6 \)? MODERATE

Magic Solution: \( 0.61 \) is slightly more than \( 0.60 \).

8. Compare: \( \frac{1}{2} \) ___ \( \frac{1}{3} \) MODERATE

Magic Solution: If the numerator is same, the fraction with the SMALLER denominator is BIGGER.

9. Order from greatest to least: \( 0.5, 0.05, 0.55 \) COMPLEX

Magic Solution: \( 0.55 > 0.50 > 0.05 \).

10. Which is true? COMPLEX

Magic Solution: \( \frac{3}{4} \) is 0.75, which is greater than 0.5.
