Day 17: Real-World Money
Preparatory Stage (Grades 3 to 5) Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
Welcome, Young Shopper! Have you ever noticed prices like ₹45.50 on a chocolate wrapper? Money and Decimals are best friends! The number before the dot represents Rupees, and the number after the dot represents Paise.
1 Rupee = 100 Paise
So, 1 Paisa = $ \frac{1}{100} $ of a Rupee = ₹0.01
| Price Tag | Rupees | Paise |
|---|---|---|
| ₹10.25 | 10 | 25 |
| ₹5.05 | 5 | 05 |
$ 12.50 $
$ + 07.75 $
———-
$ 20.25 $
Aryan buys a pen for ₹15.50 and an eraser for ₹5.25. How much does he pay in total?
Solution: ₹15.50 + ₹5.25 = ₹20.75
Sana gives a ₹100 note to buy a toy costing ₹82.50. How much change should she get back?
Solution: ₹100.00 – ₹82.50 = ₹17.50
Find 3 packed food items in your kitchen (like biscuits or salt). Note down their MRP (Maximum Retail Price) and practice saying them as “Rupees and Paise”.
With your parents, pretend to sell 2 items (like a book and a toy). Give them “Decimal Prices” and calculate the total bill on a piece of paper!
