Day 4: Photosynthesis Deep-Dive ๐ŸŒฑโ˜€๏ธ

Preparatory Stage Science | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

๐ŸŽฏ 1. Concept: Plants as Producers

Unlike animals, plants make their own food. This process is called Photosynthesis. It mainly happens in the leaves, which act as the plant’s “Green Kitchen.”

The Ingredients:
  • Sunlight: The energy used to cook the food.
  • Water: Absorbed by the roots from the soil.
  • Carbon Dioxide: A gas absorbed from the air through tiny holes in leaves called Stomata.

๐Ÿ’ก 2. The Result: Sugar and Oxygen

During photosynthesis, the plant creates a type of sugar called Glucose for its energy. As a “thank you” to the planet, it releases Oxygen back into the air for us to breathe!

Chlorophyll: This is the green pigment in leaves that catches the sunlight. Without it, photosynthesis cannot happen.

๐ŸŒ 3. Science in Action: Why Forests Matter

Forests are often called the “Lungs of the World.” Because billions of leaves are performing photosynthesis every day, they remove harmful Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and keep our air fresh and full of Oxygen.

๐Ÿ“ 4. Lab Task: Leaf Masking

Objective: Prove that light is necessary for photosynthesis.

  • Find a healthy leaf on a potted plant.
  • Cover a small part of the leaf with a piece of black paper or foil (use a paperclip).
  • Leave it for 3-4 days in a sunny spot.
  • Observation: Remove the paper. The covered part will be paler or yellowish because it couldn’t catch sunlight to make food/chlorophyll!

โœ… 5. Day 4 Practice Test

Answer these 10 questions using the concepts from the “Green Kitchen.”

Easy
1. What is the process of plants making their own food called?
Solution: Photosynthesis is the “Sun-Food” process (Part 1).
Easy
2. Which gas do plants absorb from the air for photosynthesis?
Solution: Plants take in Carbon Dioxide through their stomata (Part 1).
Easy
3. What is the name of the green pigment that catches sunlight?
Solution: Chlorophyll gives leaves their color and traps sun energy (Part 2).
Easy
4. Tiny holes on the surface of leaves are called:
Solution: Stomata are the “doors” for gases to enter and exit (Part 1).
Medium
5. What type of sugar do plants produce for energy?
Solution: Glucose is the chemical food made by the plant (Part 2).
Medium
6. Why are plants called “Producers”?
Solution: They “produce” energy from scratch using the sun (Part 1).
Medium
7. Which of these is NOT an ingredient for photosynthesis?
Solution: While plants grow in soil, the “ingredients” for the chemical reaction are light, water, and gas (Part 1).
Medium
8. What was the result of covering the leaf in the lab task?
Solution: Without light, that section couldn’t perform photosynthesis or stay green (Part 4).
Hard
9. Assertion (A): Photosynthesis is beneficial for animals.
Reason (R): It removes Carbon Dioxide and releases Oxygen.
Solution: Animals need oxygen to breathe, which plants provide (Part 2 & 3).
Hard
10. Photosynthesis mainly happens in the ______, but water is collected by the ______.
Solution: Leaves are the kitchen, roots are the water-collectors (Part 1).
