🎯 1. Concept: What are “Like Fractions”?

Welcome to Day 6! Today we are going to combine fractions together. Before we start, we need to know the rule of Like Fractions.

“Like Fractions” are fractions that have the exact same bottom number (Denominator). This means the slices are the exact same size!

For example, 1/5 and 3/5 are Like Fractions. But 1/4 and 1/8 are NOT.

💡 2. The Golden Rule of Adding/Subtracting

The Rule: ONLY add or subtract the Top Numbers! The Bottom Number stays the same.

  • Addition: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4.
    (Think: 1 slice + 2 slices = 3 slices. The pizza is still cut into 4 parts, so the bottom stays 4!)
  • Subtraction: 5/8 – 2/8 = 3/8.
    (Think: You had 5 slices, you gave away 2. You have 3 slices left. The size of the slice didn’t change.)

⚠️ Never add the bottom numbers together! 1/4 + 1/4 does NOT equal 2/8!

🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life

We add fractions all the time when doing chores or playing!

Scenario 1 (Painting): You are painting a fence. Before lunch, you paint 2/10 of the fence. After lunch, you paint 3/10 of the fence. How much is painted? Just add the tops: 2 + 3 = 5. You painted 5/10 of the fence!

Scenario 2 (Eating): Your mom bought a pie cut into 6 slices (6/6). Your family eats 4 slices (4/6). How much is left? Subtract the tops: 6 – 4 = 2. There is 2/6 of the pie left!

📝 4. Application Tasks

Grab your math journal and try these tasks today!

  • Task A: Color the Grid: Draw a rectangle and divide it into 8 equal boxes. Color 3 boxes blue (3/8). Color 2 boxes red (2/8). Count the total colored boxes to prove that 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8!
  • Task B: The Whole Truth: Write down a fraction that equals 1 whole (like 5/5 or 10/10). Subtract a smaller fraction from it. What did you get?

4. TRUE or FALSE: When adding fractions, you must add both the top numbers AND the bottom numbers.
Solution: FALSE! You never add the denominators together. If you have 1/4 and 1/4, you don’t magically get 1/8 pieces!

5. You eat 2/8 of a pizza. Your friend eats 3/8 of the pizza. How much pizza did you eat altogether?
Solution: Add the tops (2 + 3 = 5). Keep the bottom (8). Together you ate 5/8 of the pizza!

6. You paint 3/6 of your bedroom wall blue. Then you paint another 2/6 of the wall blue. How much of the wall is painted blue now?
Solution: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Almost the whole wall is painted!

7. You have 7/10 of a chocolate bar. You give 4/10 of the bar to your little sister. How much chocolate is left for you?
Solution: This is subtraction. 7 – 4 = 3. The bottom stays 10. You have 3/10 left.

8. You have 3/5 of a pie. How much MORE pie do you need to add to make a complete whole pie (5/5)?
Solution: To get from 3 up to 5, you need 2 more. So you need 2/5 more to complete the whole!

9. 🧠 Multi-Step Puzzle: You are reading a book. You read 2/10 of it on Monday, and 3/10 of it on Tuesday. How much of the book is LEFT to read?
Solution: Step 1: Add what you read (2/10 + 3/10 = 5/10). Step 2: The whole book is 10/10. Subtract what you read (10/10 – 5/10 = 5/10). Half the book is left!
Hard
10. 🧠 Tricky Puzzle: Your dad buys 1 whole apple. You ask for 1/4 of the apple. What fraction of the apple does your dad have left?
Solution: 1 whole apple is exactly 4/4 (four quarters). If you take 1/4 away, the math is: 4/4 – 1/4 = 3/4.
