Day 8: Discovering Decimals! 🎯
Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
🎯 1. Concept: What is a Decimal?
Welcome to Week 2! Last week we learned about Fractions. Today, we are learning about a different way to write fractions called Decimals.
A decimal is a number that uses a small dot (called a decimal point) to separate whole numbers from parts of a whole.
💡 2. The Rule of the Decimal Point
The decimal point acts like a wall between big numbers and tiny pieces!
- Everything to the LEFT of the decimal point is a WHOLE number (Ones, Tens, Hundreds).
- Everything to the RIGHT of the decimal point is a PART of a whole (Tenths, Hundredths).
Example: In the number 3.4, the 3 is a whole number, and the 4 represents four-tenths (4/10) of a whole.
🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life
Decimals are used every single day, especially when we talk about money and measuring!
Scenario 1: Money! If you buy a chocolate bar for ₹15.50, you are using decimals! The 15 is the whole rupees, and the 50 represents 50 paise (which is a fraction, 50/100, of a rupee).
Scenario 2: Weighing scales: When you buy apples, the scale might say 1.5 kg. This means you have 1 whole kilogram and exactly half (5/10) of another kilogram.
📝 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)
Let’s go on a decimal hunt around the house!
- Task A: The Receipt Detective: Ask your parents for a grocery store bill or receipt. Look at the prices and circle 3 different numbers that use a decimal point. Read them out loud!
- Task B: The Ruler Challenge: Grab a ruler. Look at the centimeters. Can you find 2.5 centimeters? Point to it and show your parent!
