Ganesh Chaturthi—also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi—is a Hindu festival honouring Lord Ganesha. Devotees worship him as the remover of obstacles, the guardian of new beginnings and the embodiment of wisdom, learning and good judgement.

The traditional story of Lord Ganesha’s birth
Hindu traditions contain several versions of Ganesha’s birth. In one of the best-known accounts, Goddess Parvati created a child and gave him life. She asked him to guard the entrance while she bathed and instructed him not to allow anyone inside.
The faithful guardian
When Lord Shiva returned, the young guardian did not recognise him and refused to let him enter. A confrontation followed, and in anger Shiva severed the boy’s head.
Parvati’s grief and Shiva’s promise
Parvati was overcome with grief and demanded that her child be restored. Realising what had happened, Shiva promised to bring the child back to life.
The elephant head and a new beginning
An elephant’s head was brought and placed upon the child. Shiva restored him to life, named him Ganesha, accepted him as his son and granted him an honoured place among the divine beings. Ganesha came to be worshipped before important undertakings so that obstacles may be faced with wisdom.

From a family festival to a public celebration
Worship of Ganesha is ancient, and the festival was celebrated in homes and royal traditions long before the modern period. During the late nineteenth century, freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak helped expand Ganesh Chaturthi into a large public celebration in Maharashtra. In 1893, he used community gatherings, speeches and cultural programmes to strengthen social unity during British rule.
How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?
Welcoming the murti
A Ganesha murti is respectfully brought into a home, school or community pandal and placed in a decorated prayer area.
Puja, prayers and aarti
Devotees offer prayers, light lamps, sing aarti and seek blessings for wisdom, well-being and successful beginnings.
Offerings and sharing
Modak and other sweets are offered as prasada and then shared with family members, friends and visitors.

Visarjan
