Day 1: The Command Center 🧠

Preparatory Stage Science | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

🎯 1. Concept: The Nervous System

Your brain is the most complex organ in the universe! It acts as a Command Center, receiving information from your senses and sending instructions to your muscles via the Spinal Cord and Nerves.

Three Major Parts:
  • Cerebrum: Controls thinking, memory, and five senses.
  • Cerebellum: Controls balance and coordination.
  • Brain Stem: Controls automatic actions like breathing and heartbeat.

💡 2. The Speed of Thought

Messages travel through your nervous system as Electrical Impulses at speeds of up to 270 km/h! These messages travel through special cells called Neurons.

🌍 3. Science in Action: Reflexes

When you touch a hot plate, you pull your hand away before you even feel the pain. This is a Reflex Action. The message only goes to the spinal cord and back—skipping the brain to save time!

📝 4. Lab Task: Ruler Drop Test

Goal: Measure your brain’s processing speed.

  • Have a friend hold a ruler vertically.
  • Place your thumb and forefinger at the bottom (0cm mark) without touching it.
  • When they drop it, catch it as fast as you can.
  • Observation: The lower the number where you caught it, the faster your nervous system processed the visual signal!

✅ 5. Preparatory Challenge (10 Questions)

Easy
1. Which part of the brain helps you solve a math problem?
Solution: The Cerebrum is responsible for complex thinking and logic.
Easy
2. Nerves are like “wires” that carry ____ signals.
Solution: Neurons communicate using tiny electrical impulses.
Easy
3. Which part of the brain keeps you from falling off your bicycle?
Solution: The Cerebellum coordinates balance and muscle movement.
Easy
4. Your heartbeat is controlled by the ____.
Solution: The Brain Stem manages involuntary actions like heart rate and breathing.
Medium
5. What protects the brain from injury?
Solution: The hard bone of the skull acts as a helmet for the brain.
Medium
6. Why is a reflex action faster than a normal action?
Solution: By bypassing the brain, the body saves milliseconds during emergencies.
Medium
7. What are the basic building blocks of the nervous system?
Solution: Neurons are specialized cells that transmit information.
Medium
8. If the Cerebellum is damaged, what would be most difficult?
Solution: Balance and coordination would be heavily affected.
Hard
9. Assertion (A): You cannot stop yourself from blinking if something flies toward your eye.
Reasoning (R): Blinking is an involuntary reflex for protection.
Solution: Reflexes are automatic and happen without our conscious choice to protect us.
Hard
10. How does the brain differentiate between the smell of a rose and the sound of music?
Solution: The Cerebrum has specific zones for each of the five senses.
