Day 12: Balancing the Algebra Scale! βš–οΈ

Middle Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences

🎯 1. Concept: The Golden Rule of Equations

Welcome to Day 12! Yesterday we learned how to write algebraic expressions. Today, we are learning how to solve them.

An equation is exactly like a seesaw or a balancing scale. The equal sign (=) is the center pivot. For the scale to stay balanced, the weight on the left must perfectly match the weight on the right!

πŸ“¦ x + 3
βš–οΈ
🍎 8
The left side (x + 3) weighs the exact same as the right side (8).

πŸ’‘ 2. Inverse Operations (The Undo Buttons)

The Golden Rule: Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you MUST do to the other side!

To find the mysterious variable (like x), we have to isolate it. We do this by using “Inverse Operations” to undo what is happening to it.

  • Addition (+) is undone by Subtraction (-).
  • Subtraction (-) is undone by Addition (+).
  • Multiplication (Γ—) is undone by Division (Γ·).
  • Division (Γ·) is undone by Multiplication (Γ—).
Solving: x + 3 = 8
+ 3 ➑️ πŸ“¦ x
βš–οΈ
🍎 8 – 3
We subtracted 3 from BOTH sides to keep it balanced. So, x = 5!

🌍 3. Math in Our Daily Life

We use inverse operations all the time to solve mysteries!

Scenario 1: The Missing Money. You had some money in your wallet (x). You spent β‚Ή20 on a burger, and now you have β‚Ή50 left. (x – 20 = 50). How do you find what you started with? You do the inverse! You ADD the β‚Ή20 back to the β‚Ή50. You started with β‚Ή70!

πŸ“ 4. Home Practice (Mental Math)

Let’s practice the undo button!

  • Task A: The Reverse Game: Have a parent give you a simple math rule (like “Multiply by 5”). You must instantly shout the inverse operation (“Divide by 5!”).
  • Task B: Balance the Scale: If an equation says `m + 10 = 25`, what operation must you do to both sides to get `m` completely by itself?

βœ… 5. Day 12 Practice Test

Are you an equation balancer? Take this quiz to test your algebra skills! Select your answers and click submit.

Easy
1. What is the Golden Rule of solving equations?
Solution: To keep the “scale” balanced, any operation done to the left side must also be done to the right side!
Easy
2. What is the inverse (opposite) operation of Subtraction?
Solution: To “undo” subtraction, you must use Addition.
Easy
3. What is the inverse (opposite) operation of Multiplication?
Solution: To “undo” multiplication, you must use Division.
Easy
4. Solve for x: x + 4 = 10
Solution: The inverse of + 4 is – 4. Subtract 4 from both sides: 10 – 4 = 6.
Medium
5. Solve for y: y – 5 = 12
Solution: The inverse of – 5 is + 5. Add 5 to both sides: 12 + 5 = 17.
Medium
6. Solve for m: 3m = 15
Solution: 3m means “3 multiplied by m”. The inverse is divide by 3. 15 Γ· 3 = 5.
Medium
7. Solve for k: k / 2 = 6
Solution: The fraction bar means “divided by 2”. The inverse is multiply by 2. 6 Γ— 2 = 12.
Medium
8. If you have the equation “2x + 1 = 9”, what should be your VERY FIRST step?
Solution: In two-step equations, always undo the addition/subtraction FIRST. You should subtract 1 from both sides.
Hard
9. Now, solve that two-step equation: 2x + 1 = 9. What is x?
Solution: Step 1: Subtract 1 (2x = 8). Step 2: Divide by 2 (x = 4).
Hard
10. Brain Teaser! Solve for p: 3p – 2 = 10
Solution: Step 1: Add 2 to both sides (3p = 12). Step 2: Divide by 3. 12 Γ· 3 = 4. So, p = 4.
