Day 12: Super Symmetry! π¦
Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
π― 1. Concept: The Perfect Match
Welcome to Day 12! Today we are looking at geometry in a beautiful new way by studying Symmetry.
A shape is “Symmetrical” if you can draw an invisible line straight through it, and both sides match perfectly, like a reflection in a mirror!
π‘ 2. The Line of Symmetry
The line that cuts a shape in half is called the Line of Symmetry.
- Vertical Line: Goes straight UP and DOWN. (Like the letter M).
- Horizontal Line: Goes straight LEFT and RIGHT. (Like the letter E).
- Multiple Lines: Some shapes have more than one! A perfect square has exactly 4 lines of symmetry.
- Asymmetrical: If a shape does NOT match on both sides, we call it asymmetrical. (Like the letter F).
π 3. Math in Our Daily Life
Nature and architects love using symmetry!
Scenario 1: Beautiful Bugs. π¦ If you look at a butterfly, its left wing is an exact mirror image of its right wing. This perfect symmetry helps them fly straight!
Scenario 2: The Taj Mahal. π One of the most famous buildings in India, the Taj Mahal, is perfectly symmetrical. If you draw a line right down the center of the main dome, the left side of the building matches the right side exactly.
π 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)
Grab some paper and a mirror, it’s time to experiment!
- Task A: The Mirror Test: Find a small mirror. Draw half of a smiley face on a piece of paper. Place the mirror standing up right next to your drawing. Look in the mirrorβdid you create a full, symmetrical face?
- Task B: The Paper Cutout: Fold a piece of paper perfectly in half. Draw half of a heart shape starting from the folded edge. Use scissors to cut it out. Unfold it to reveal a perfectly symmetrical heart!
