Day 12: Subtraction Safari! β
Foundation Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
π― 1. Concept: Taking Things Away
Welcome to Day 12! Yesterday we added things together to make our numbers bigger. Today, we are learning about Subtraction.
Subtraction means “taking away.” When we subtract, our final number gets smaller!
π‘ 2. The Magic Signs
To do subtraction, you need to know these two signs:
- β The Minus Sign: This straight little line means “take away” or “subtract.”
- π° The Equals Sign: This means “is the same as” or “how many are left.”
π 3. Math in Our Daily Life
We use subtraction every time we eat snacks or spend money!
Scenario 1: Eating Cookies! πͺ If your mom gives you 5 cookies, and you eat 2 of them, how many are left? You just did subtraction! (5 – 2 = 3 cookies left).
Scenario 2: Popping Balloons! π You have 10 balloons at a birthday party. Oh no, 1 balloon pops! Now you have 9 balloons. (10 – 1 = 9).
π 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)
Parents, please guide your child with these taking-away games!
- Task A: The Toy Box Takedown: Put 10 small toys in a line. Close your eyes while your parent takes 3 toys away. Open your eyes, count what is left, and say the math sentence out loud! (“10 minus 3 equals 7!”)
- Task B: Snack Time Math: At snack time, count out 8 grapes, crackers, or chips. Every time you eat one, say the new subtraction sentence. (e.g., “8 minus 1 equals 7!”)
