Day 14: Adding & Subtracting Fractions
Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
Level 1: The Quest (Concept) ๐
Welcome, Math Explorer! Today, we are learning how to combine and take away parts of a whole. When the bottom numbers (Denominators) are the same, they are called Like Fractions. Adding them is as easy as adding apples!
$$\frac{1}{4} + \frac{2}{4} = \text{?}$$
Look: Only the top numbers (Numerators) change. The bottom stays the same!
Level 2: Power-Ups (Tools/Methods) โก
- Step 1: Check if the bottom numbers are identical.
- Step 2: Add or subtract the top numbers.
- Step 3: Write the answer over the original bottom number.
Subtraction Power-Up:
$$\frac{5}{8} – \frac{2}{8} = \frac{5 – 2}{8} = \frac{3}{8}$$
Imagine a pizza with 8 slices. You have 5, you eat 2. You have 3 left!
Level 3: Mini-Boss Battles (Daily Life) โ๏ธ
Rahul filled $\frac{2}{5}$ of a glass with orange juice and $\frac{1}{5}$ with water. How much of the glass is full?
Answer: $\frac{3}{5}$ of the glass!
Sara had $\frac{7}{10}$ of a chocolate bar. She gave $\frac{3}{10}$ to her brother. How much does she have left?
Answer: $\frac{4}{10}$ (which is also $\frac{2}{5}$)!
Level 4: Home Quests (Activities) ๐
With a parent, find a measuring cup. Fill $\frac{1}{4}$ cup with rice. Add another $\frac{1}{4}$ cup. Look at the linesโdid it reach the $\frac{1}{2}$ ($\frac{2}{4}$) mark? Draw what you see!
Take a long Lego brick (8 studs). Cover 3 studs with one color and 2 studs with another. What fraction of the brick is covered? Write the equation: $\frac{3}{8} + \frac{2}{8} = \dots$
