Day 9: Measuring the World! π
Preparatory Stage Mathematics | Apex Institute of Maths and Sciences
π― 1. Concept: Area vs. Perimeter
Welcome to Day 9! Today we are looking at geometry and learning how to measure flat shapes like rectangles and squares. There are two very important ways to measure a shape: Perimeter and Area.
π‘ 2. The Golden Rules of Measurement
Perimeter = The Outside Edge!
- It is the total distance around the outside of a shape.
- To find it, you just add all the sides together.
- Example: A square with sides of 3 cm has a perimeter of 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 cm.
Area = The Inside Space!
- It is the amount of flat space inside the shape.
- To find the Area of a rectangle, you multiply the Length Γ Width.
- Example: A rectangle that is 4 cm long and 2 cm wide has an area of 4 Γ 2 = 8 square cm.
π 3. Math in Our Daily Life
Architects, builders, and designers use Area and Perimeter every single day!
Scenario 1: Fencing a Garden (Perimeter). If you want to build a wooden fence to keep bunnies out of your vegetable garden, you only care about the distance around the edge. You need to calculate the Perimeter!
Scenario 2: Painting a Wall (Area). If you want to paint your bedroom wall blue, you need to cover the entire flat space inside the edges of the wall. To know how much paint to buy, you must calculate the Area!
π 4. Home Practice (Fun Tasks)
Grab a ruler or a measuring tape and let’s get moving!
- Task A: The Book Border: Take your favorite book. Measure the top edge and the side edge. Add all four edges together. You just found the Perimeter of your book!
- Task B: The Floor Tiles: Does your kitchen or bathroom have square floor tiles? Count how many tiles are in one long row (length) and how many are in one short row (width). Multiply them to find the total Area in “tiles”!
